克利夫理查，1940年的十月十四日出生于印度，父母是在当地工作的英国人。他在八岁那年回到英国，还曾经因为肤色黝黑被误为印度人而受尽排挤，但不久就适应了环境，加入学校的合唱团。1957年，观赏过比尔海利（Bill Haley）在英国的演出后，他对摇滚乐产生了热爱，随即和友人共组乐队，取名为The Drifters，他自己担任吉他手和主唱，以模仿猫王的风格。赢得了唱片公司的合约，在1958年推出的首张单曲「Move It」后来被公认为英国的第一张摇滚乐唱片。
